## 1. Personal Pronouns & Verb Conjugation (Present Tense)

### Explanation
Every German verb changes its ending based on the **subject pronoun**. The infinitive (dictionary form) usually ends in **-en** (e.g. *lernen, kommen, machen*). To conjugate a regular verb, remove **-en** and add the ending below.

### Personal Pronouns

| Person | Pronoun | English |
|---|---|---|
| 1st sg. | ich | I |
| 2nd sg. informal | du | you |
| 3rd sg. | er / sie / es | he / she / it |
| 1st pl. | wir | we |
| 2nd pl. informal | ihr | you (all) |
| 3rd pl. | sie | they |
| 2nd formal (sg./pl.) | Sie | you (formal) |

### Regular Verb Endings — *lernen* (to learn)

| Pronoun | Ending | Form |
|---|---|---|
| ich | -e | lern**e** |
| du | -st | lern**st** |
| er/sie/es | -t | lern**t** |
| wir | -en | lern**en** |
| ihr | -t | lern**t** |
| sie/Sie | -en | lern**en** |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich lerne Deutsch.** — I learn German.
- **Du wohnst in Berlin.** — You live in Berlin.
- **Er kommt aus Spanien.** — He comes from Spain.
- **Wir spielen Fußball.** — We play football.
- **Ihr macht Hausaufgaben.** — You (all) do homework.
- **Sie trinken Kaffee.** — They drink coffee.
- **Wie heißen Sie?** — What is your name? (formal)

### Exceptions & Notes
- Verbs whose stem ends in **-t, -d, -ffn, -chn** insert an extra **-e-** before *-st* and *-t* for pronunciation:
  - **arbeiten** → du arbeit**est**, er arbeit**et**, ihr arbeit**et**
  - **finden** → du find**est**, er find**et**
  - **öffnen** → du öffn**est**, er öffn**et**
- Verbs whose stem ends in **-s, -ß, -z, -x** add only **-t** in *du* form (not *-st*):
  - **heißen** → du heiß**t** (not *heißst*)
  - **tanzen** → du tanz**t**
  - **reisen** → du reis**t**

---

## 2. The Verbs *sein* and *haben*

### Explanation
These are the two most important verbs in German. They are highly irregular and you must memorise them.

| Pronoun | sein (to be) | haben (to have) |
|---|---|---|
| ich | bin | habe |
| du | bist | hast |
| er/sie/es | ist | hat |
| wir | sind | haben |
| ihr | seid | habt |
| sie/Sie | sind | haben |

### Example Sentences — *sein*
- **Ich bin müde.** — I am tired.
- **Du bist sehr freundlich.** — You are very friendly.
- **Er ist mein Bruder.** — He is my brother.
- **Wir sind aus Indien.** — We are from India.
- **Ihr seid pünktlich.** — You (all) are on time.
- **Sie sind Lehrer.** — They are teachers.
- **Entschuldigung, sind Sie Frau Müller?** — Excuse me, are you Mrs. Müller?

### Example Sentences — *haben*
- **Ich habe einen Hund.** — I have a dog.
- **Hast du Zeit?** — Do you have time?
- **Sie hat ein neues Auto.** — She has a new car.
- **Wir haben Hunger.** — We are hungry. (lit. "We have hunger")
- **Habt ihr Geschwister?** — Do you (all) have siblings?
- **Haben Sie einen Pass?** — Do you have a passport? (formal)

### Notes
- German uses *haben* for many states that English expresses with *to be*: *Hunger haben* (be hungry), *Durst haben* (be thirsty), *Angst haben* (be afraid), *Recht haben* (be right).

---

## 3. Sentence Structure: W-Frage, Aussagesatz, Ja-/Nein-Frage

### Explanation
German has three basic sentence types. The conjugated verb is always in **position 2** in statements and W-questions, but in **position 1** in yes/no questions and commands.

| Type | Position 1 | Position 2 (verb) | Rest |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aussagesatz (statement) | Subject / time / place | conjugated verb | rest |
| W-Frage (W-question) | W-word (wer, was, wo…) | conjugated verb | rest |
| Ja-/Nein-Frage | conjugated verb | subject | rest |

### Example Sentences
- **Aussagesatz:** *Ich komme aus Brasilien.* — I come from Brazil.
- **Aussagesatz (with time first):** *Heute lerne ich Deutsch.* — Today I learn German.
- **W-Frage:** *Woher kommst du?* — Where are you from?
- **W-Frage:** *Wie heißt du?* — What is your name?
- **W-Frage:** *Was machst du?* — What do you do?
- **Ja-/Nein-Frage:** *Kommst du aus Italien?* — Do you come from Italy?
- **Ja-/Nein-Frage:** *Sprichst du Deutsch?* — Do you speak German?

### Common W-words
| Word | Meaning |
|---|---|
| wer | who |
| was | what |
| wo | where |
| woher | from where |
| wohin | to where |
| wann | when |
| wie | how |
| warum | why |
| wie viel / wie viele | how much / how many |

## 4. Numbers, Telephone & Spelling

### Numbers 0–20
0 null · 1 eins · 2 zwei · 3 drei · 4 vier · 5 fünf · 6 sechs · 7 sieben · 8 acht · 9 neun · 10 zehn · 11 elf · 12 zwölf · 13 dreizehn · 14 vierzehn · 15 fünfzehn · 16 sechzehn (no *-s*) · 17 siebzehn (no *-en*) · 18 achtzehn · 19 neunzehn · 20 zwanzig.

### Numbers from 21 — read **backwards**
- **einundzwanzig** (1 + 20)
- **zweiundzwanzig** (2 + 20)
- **dreiunddreißig** (3 + 30)
- **siebenundvierzig** (47)
- **hundert** (100), **tausend** (1 000), **eine Million**

### Example Sentences
- **Meine Telefonnummer ist null-eins-sieben-fünf-…** — My phone number is 0175-…
- **Ich bin dreißig Jahre alt.** — I am thirty years old.

### Notes
- In German telephone numbers, digits are usually spoken in pairs or one by one.
- Years are read in pairs up to 1999 (*neunzehnhundertneunundneunzig*), and as full numbers from 2000 (*zweitausendvierundzwanzig*).

## 5. Nouns: Gender, Articles & Plural

### Explanation
Every German noun has a **gender**: masculine (*der*), feminine (*die*), or neuter (*das*). Nouns are always **capitalised**. The article tells you the gender.

### Definite Article *der/das/die* (Nominative)

| Masculine | Neuter | Feminine | Plural (all genders) |
|---|---|---|---|
| **der** Mann | **das** Kind | **die** Frau | **die** Männer / Kinder / Frauen |

### Example Sentences
- **Der Tisch ist groß.** — The table is big.
- **Das Buch ist interessant.** — The book is interesting.
- **Die Lampe ist neu.** — The lamp is new.
- **Die Stühle sind alt.** — The chairs are old.

### Plural Forms — five main patterns

| Pattern | Singular → Plural | Example |
|---|---|---|
| -e | der Tisch → die Tisch**e** | the table |
| -er (often + Umlaut) | das Buch → die B**ü**ch**er** | the book |
| -(e)n | die Frau → die Frau**en** | the woman |
| -s (loanwords) | das Auto → die Auto**s** | the car |
| no change (sometimes Umlaut) | der Lehrer → die Lehrer / der Vater → die V**ä**ter | the teacher / father |

### Tips on Gender (general patterns, not 100% rules)
- **Masculine:** days, months, seasons, alcoholic drinks, most jobs ending in *-er* (*der Lehrer*), most nouns ending in *-ig, -ich, -ling*.
- **Feminine:** most nouns ending in *-e, -ung, -heit, -keit, -schaft, -ion, -tät, -ik*.
- **Neuter:** most nouns ending in *-chen, -lein, -ment, -um*, infinitives used as nouns (*das Essen*).

### Notes
- Always learn a new noun **with its article and plural**: *die Tür, die Türen*.

---

## 6. Irregular (Stem-Changing) Verbs

### Explanation
Some verbs change their **stem vowel** in the *du* and *er/sie/es* forms only. The endings are still regular.

| Type | Infinitive | du | er/sie/es | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| a → ä | fahren | du fährst | er fährt | drive |
| | schlafen | du schläfst | er schläft | sleep |
| | tragen | du trägst | er trägt | carry/wear |
| e → i | essen | du isst | er isst | eat |
| | geben | du gibst | er gibt | give |
| | helfen | du hilfst | er hilft | help |
| | sprechen | du sprichst | er spricht | speak |
| | treffen | du triffst | er trifft | meet |
| | nehmen | du **nimmst** | er **nimmt** | take |
| e → ie | sehen | du siehst | er sieht | see |
| | lesen | du liest | er liest | read |
| special | wissen | du weißt | er weiß | know |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich fahre nach Berlin. – Fährst du auch?** — I'm driving to Berlin. Are you driving too?
- **Er schläft acht Stunden.** — He sleeps 8 hours.
- **Was isst du gern?** — What do you like eating?
- **Sie spricht drei Sprachen.** — She speaks three languages.
- **Liest du gern Bücher?** — Do you like reading books?
- **Ich nehme einen Tee.** — I'll take a tea.

### Notes
- *nehmen* and *essen* have spelling changes too (not just vowel changes).
- *wissen* is fully irregular in the singular: ich weiß, du weißt, er weiß.

---

## 7. Indefinite Article *ein/eine* and Negation *kein/keine*

### Explanation
*ein* = "a/an" — used for masculine and neuter; *eine* = feminine. To negate a noun (say "no/not a"), simply add **k-** to *ein*: *kein, kein, keine, keine (plural)*.

### Table (Nominative)

| Gender | Indefinite | Negation |
|---|---|---|
| Masc. | **ein** Mann | **kein** Mann |
| Neut. | **ein** Buch | **kein** Buch |
| Fem. | **eine** Frau | **keine** Frau |
| Plural | — (no article) | **keine** Männer |

### Example Sentences
- **Das ist ein Tisch.** — That is a table.
- **Hier ist eine Lampe.** — Here is a lamp.
- **Ich habe ein Auto.** — I have a car.
- **Das ist kein Buch, das ist ein Heft.** — That isn't a book, it's a notebook.
- **Ich habe keine Zeit.** — I have no time.
- **Hier gibt es keine Stühle.** — There are no chairs here.

### *kein* vs. *nicht*
- Use **kein** to negate a noun with *ein-* or no article: *Ich habe **keinen** Hund.*
- Use **nicht** to negate verbs, adjectives, names, or nouns with a definite article: *Ich komme **nicht**. / Der Kaffee ist **nicht** gut. / Ich heiße **nicht** Tim.*

---

## 8. Imperative with *Sie* (Formal)

### Explanation
The formal imperative is formed by **inverting** the present-tense Sie-form: *Sie kommen* → ***Kommen Sie!***

### Example Sentences
- **Kommen Sie bitte herein!** — Please come in!
- **Sprechen Sie langsam, bitte.** — Please speak slowly.
- **Nehmen Sie Platz!** — Take a seat!
- **Lesen Sie den Text!** — Read the text.
- **Seien Sie ruhig!** — Be quiet! *(exception: sein → seien)*

### Notes
- *sein* is irregular here: **Seien Sie …!**
- Polite imperatives nearly always include *bitte*.

---

## 9. Adjectives with *sein* (Predicative)

### Explanation
When an adjective comes **after the verb sein** (or *werden, bleiben*), it does **not** change its ending — no matter the noun's gender or number.

### Example Sentences
- **Der Tisch ist groß.** — The table is big.
- **Die Lampe ist neu.** — The lamp is new.
- **Das Auto ist teuer.** — The car is expensive.
- **Die Stühle sind alt.** — The chairs are old.
- **Berlin ist schön.** — Berlin is beautiful.

### Notes
- Adjective endings only appear when the adjective is **directly in front of a noun** (*ein schön**es** Buch*) — that's covered in A2.

---

## 10. The Accusative Case (Akkusativ)

### Explanation
The **Akkusativ** marks the **direct object** — the thing that "receives" the verb's action. Only the **masculine** article changes; feminine, neuter and plural stay the same as the Nominativ.

### Article Forms (Nominativ → Akkusativ)

| Gender | Nominativ | Akkusativ |
|---|---|---|
| Masc. | der / ein / kein / mein | **den / einen / keinen / meinen** |
| Neut. | das / ein / kein / mein | das / ein / kein / mein *(no change)* |
| Fem. | die / eine / keine / meine | die / eine / keine / meine *(no change)* |
| Plural | die / — / keine / meine | die / — / keine / meine *(no change)* |

### Common Verbs Requiring Accusative
*haben, kaufen, suchen, brauchen, essen, trinken, lesen, sehen, nehmen, möchten, mögen, lieben, kennen, bestellen, bezahlen, machen*

### Example Sentences
- **Ich habe einen Bruder.** — I have a brother. *(der Bruder → einen Bruder)*
- **Ich kaufe ein Brot.** — I'm buying a (loaf of) bread. *(das Brot → ein Brot, no change)*
- **Wir nehmen eine Pizza.** — We'll take a pizza.
- **Sie sucht den Schlüssel.** — She is looking for the key.
- **Hast du keinen Hunger?** — Aren't you hungry?
- **Ich möchte den Tee, nicht den Kaffee.** — I'd like the tea, not the coffee.

### Notes
- Easy memory hook: **only the masculine "der" changes to "den"** in the accusative.
- *es gibt* always takes the accusative: *Es gibt ein**en** Park.*

---

## 11. Verbs *mögen* and *möchten*

### Explanation
- ***mögen*** = "to like" (a thing in general). Used like a normal verb with a direct object.
- ***möchten*** = "would like" (a polite wish — actually the subjunctive of *mögen*). Used to order or request.

### Conjugation

| Pronoun | mögen | möchten |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mag | möchte |
| du | magst | möchtest |
| er/sie/es | mag | möchte |
| wir | mögen | möchten |
| ihr | mögt | möchtet |
| sie/Sie | mögen | möchten |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich mag Kaffee.** — I like coffee.
- **Magst du Schokolade?** — Do you like chocolate?
- **Er mag keine Pizza.** — He doesn't like pizza.
- **Ich möchte einen Kaffee, bitte.** — I'd like a coffee, please.
- **Was möchten Sie trinken?** — What would you like to drink?
- **Wir möchten die Speisekarte sehen.** — We'd like to see the menu.

### Notes
- *möchten* often combines with an infinitive at the end of the sentence (modal-verb pattern): *Ich möchte einen Tee **trinken**.*

---

## 12. Position of Elements in the Sentence (Satzpositionen)

### Explanation
The conjugated verb is **always in position 2**. Position 1 can be the subject, a time element, or a place. If something other than the subject is in position 1, the **subject moves after the verb** (inversion).

| Position 1 | Position 2 (verb) | Mid-field | End |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ich | trinke | morgens Kaffee | . |
| Morgens | trinke | ich Kaffee | . |
| Kaffee | trinke | ich morgens | . |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich kaufe heute Brot.** — I buy bread today.
- **Heute kaufe ich Brot.** — Today I buy bread.
- **Brot kaufe ich heute.** — Bread, I buy today. *(emphasis)*

### TeKaMoLo (mid-field order)
Inside the mid-field, the typical order is **Te**mporal – **Ka**usal – **Mo**dal – **Lo**kal (time – cause – manner – place):
- **Ich fahre morgen wegen der Arbeit mit dem Auto nach München.**
(tomorrow / because of work / by car / to Munich)

---

## 13. Time Expressions: *am*, *um*, *von … bis*

### Rules

| Use | Preposition | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Days, dates, parts of day | **am** (an + dem) | am Montag, am Wochenende, am Abend |
| Clock time | **um** | um 8 Uhr |
| From … to … | **von … bis …** | von 9 bis 17 Uhr |
| Months, seasons, year | **im** (in + dem) | im Mai, im Sommer, im Jahr 2024 |
| Year (alternative) | (no preposition) | 2024 |

### Example Sentences
- **Am Montag arbeite ich.** — On Monday I work.
- **Am Wochenende treffe ich Freunde.** — On the weekend I meet friends.
- **Der Kurs beginnt um 9 Uhr.** — The course begins at 9 o'clock.
- **Ich arbeite von 8 bis 17 Uhr.** — I work from 8 to 5.
- **Im Sommer fahren wir nach Italien.** — In summer we go to Italy.
- **In der Nacht** *(exception: feminine "die Nacht" → in der Nacht)*

### Exception
- **in der Nacht** — at night. (Feminine, takes dative *der*, not *am*.)

---

## 14. Possessive Articles (Nominative & Accusative)

### Explanation
Possessive articles tell you who something belongs to. They take the **same endings as *ein/kein***.

| Pronoun | Possessive |
|---|---|
| ich | mein |
| du | dein |
| er / es | sein |
| sie (she) | ihr |
| wir | unser |
| ihr (you all) | euer |
| sie (they) | ihr |
| Sie (formal) | Ihr |

### Endings (Nominativ / Akkusativ)

| Gender | Nominativ | Akkusativ |
|---|---|---|
| Masc. | mein Vater | mein**en** Vater |
| Neut. | mein Kind | mein Kind |
| Fem. | mein**e** Mutter | mein**e** Mutter |
| Plural | mein**e** Eltern | mein**e** Eltern |

### Example Sentences
- **Das ist mein Bruder.** — That's my brother.
- **Ich liebe meine Mutter.** — I love my mother.
- **Wo ist dein Buch?** — Where is your book?
- **Ich kenne seinen Vater.** — I know his father. *(akk., masculine)*
- **Wir besuchen unsere Großeltern.** — We visit our grandparents.
- **Ihr Auto ist neu.** — Her/their/your(formal) car is new.

### Notes
- *euer* loses the **e** when it gets an ending: *euer* → ***eure*** Mutter, ***euren*** Vater.

---

## 15. Modal Verbs: *können*, *müssen*, *wollen*

### Explanation
Modal verbs **change the meaning** of another verb. They are **irregular in the singular** and need a **second verb in the infinitive at the end** of the sentence.

| Pronoun | können (can) | müssen (must) | wollen (want) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ich | kann | muss | will |
| du | kannst | musst | willst |
| er/sie/es | kann | muss | will |
| wir | können | müssen | wollen |
| ihr | könnt | müsst | wollt |
| sie/Sie | können | müssen | wollen |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich kann Deutsch sprechen.** — I can speak German.
- **Kannst du mir helfen?** — Can you help me?
- **Wir müssen jetzt los.** — We have to go now.
- **Du musst die Hausaufgaben machen.** — You have to do your homework.
- **Sie will Ärztin werden.** — She wants to become a doctor.
- **Wollt ihr ins Kino gehen?** — Do you (all) want to go to the cinema?

### Notes
- The **ich** and **er/sie/es** forms are **identical** (no *-e* and no *-t*).

---

## 16. Sentence Bracket (Satzklammer)

### Explanation
When a sentence has a modal verb (or a separable verb, or Perfekt), the conjugated verb is in **position 2** and the **second part** (infinitive / separable prefix / Partizip II) goes to **the end** — forming a "bracket".

| Position 1 | Position 2 (modal/aux) | … middle … | End (infinitive / prefix / Partizip II) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ich | muss | heute Deutsch | lernen. |
| Wann | können | wir uns | treffen? |
| Sie | will | nach Berlin | fahren. |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich muss heute viel arbeiten.** — I have to work a lot today.
- **Kannst du am Samstag kommen?** — Can you come on Saturday?
- **Wir wollen morgen ein Picknick machen.** — We want to have a picnic tomorrow.
- **Er möchte einen Kaffee bestellen.** — He'd like to order a coffee.

---

## 17. Dates and Ordinal Numbers

### Explanation
Ordinal numbers ("first, second, third…") are built by adding **-te** to numbers 1–19 and **-ste** from 20 onward.

| Number | Ordinal |
|---|---|
| 1 | erste *(irregular)* |
| 2 | zweite |
| 3 | dritte *(irregular)* |
| 4 | vierte |
| 5 | fünfte |
| 6 | sechste |
| 7 | siebte *(irregular, no -en-)* |
| 8 | achte *(only one t)* |
| 10 | zehnte |
| 20 | zwanzigste |
| 21 | einundzwanzigste |

### Date Patterns
- **Heute ist der 1. Mai.** *(read: der **erste** Mai)* — Today is the 1st of May.
- **Ich habe am 3. Juni Geburtstag.** *(am **dritten** Juni)* — My birthday is on 3rd June.
- **Wir fahren am 21. August nach Wien.** *(am einundzwanzigsten August)*

### Notes
- After **am** (date), the ordinal takes **-en** (dative): *am erst**en** Januar, am dritt**en** Mai*.
- A dot after the number (1. , 2. , 3.) signals an ordinal.

---

## 18. Separable Verbs (Trennbare Verben)

### Explanation
Many German verbs have a **separable prefix** that splits off and goes to the end of the main clause. The prefix is always **stressed** in pronunciation (**án**rufen, **éin**kaufen).

Common separable prefixes: **an-, auf-, aus-, ein-, mit-, zu-, ab-, vor-, weg-, fern-, los-, nach-, hin-, her-**.

### Structure (Main Clause)
**Subject + verb (pos. 2) + … + prefix (end).**

### Example Sentences
- **Ich rufe meine Mutter an.** *(anrufen)* — I call my mother.
- **Wir kaufen heute ein.** *(einkaufen)* — We're going shopping today.
- **Der Zug kommt um 8 Uhr an.** *(ankommen)* — The train arrives at 8.
- **Er steht um 6 Uhr auf.** *(aufstehen)* — He gets up at 6.
- **Sehen wir morgen fern?** *(fernsehen)* — Are we watching TV tomorrow?
- **Komm bitte mit!** *(mitkommen)* — Please come along!

### With Modal Verbs (stay together)
- **Ich möchte dich heute Abend anrufen.** — I'd like to call you tonight.
- **Wir wollen morgen einkaufen.** — We want to go shopping tomorrow.

### Notes
- In **subordinate clauses** (weil, dass, wenn) the verb (with prefix re-attached) goes to the end:
  - *Ich weiß, dass er um 6 Uhr **aufsteht**.*

---

## 19. Personal Pronouns in the Accusative

### Table

| Nominativ | Akkusativ |
|---|---|
| ich | mich |
| du | dich |
| er | ihn |
| sie | sie |
| es | es |
| wir | uns |
| ihr | euch |
| sie / Sie | sie / Sie |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich sehe dich.** — I see you.
- **Liebst du mich?** — Do you love me?
- **Ich kenne ihn gut.** — I know him well.
- **Wir besuchen euch am Sonntag.** — We're visiting you (all) on Sunday.
- **Treffen Sie sie heute?** — Are you meeting her/them today?

### Memory hook
The masculine *der → den* parallels *er → ihn*. The other forms stay the same (sie, es, sie).

---

### Article Forms in the Dative

| Gender | Definite | Indefinite / Possessive |
|---|---|---|
| Masc. | de**m** Mann | eine**m** / meine**m** Mann |

| Fem. | de**r** Frau | eine**r** / meine**r** Frau |
| Plural | de**n** Männer**n** | meine**n** Männer**n** |

### Important Plural Rule
In the **dative plural**, **the noun itself gets an -n** (unless the plural already ends in -n or -s):
- die Kinder → den Kinder**n**
- die Männer → den Männer**n**
- die Frauen → den Frauen *(already ends in -n)*
- die Autos → den Autos *(plural in -s)*

### Example Sentences

### Common Dative-Only Verbs

### Notes
- Always learn the case a verb governs when you learn the verb: *helfen + Dativ*, *gehören + Dativ*.

---

## 38. Indefinite Pronoun *man*

### Explanation
*man* means "one / people in general / you" — never refers to a specific person. It always takes the **3rd-person singular** verb form.

### Example Sentences

- **In Deutschland trinkt man viel Kaffee.** — In Germany, people drink a lot of coffee.
- **Wie sagt man das auf Deutsch?** — How do you say that in German?

### Notes
- *man* (indefinite pronoun) ≠ *der Mann* (man, noun). Don't confuse them.

---

## 39. Conjunction *denn*

### Explanation
*denn* = "because/for". It is a **coordinating conjunction** (like *und, aber*), so the **word order doesn't change** — the verb stays in **position 2** of the second clause.

### Structure
**Main clause + , + denn + main clause (normal order).**

### Example Sentences
- **Ich lerne Deutsch, denn ich will in Deutschland arbeiten.** — I'm learning German, because I want to work in Germany.
- **Er geht früh ins Bett, denn er ist müde.** — He goes to bed early, because he is tired.
- **Wir bleiben zu Hause, denn es regnet.** — We're staying home, because it's raining.

- Compare with **weil** (A2 — subordinating, sends verb to the end). *Denn* is easier — start here.

## 41. Time Prepositions with Dative: *vor*, *nach*, *in*, *seit*

Several prepositions for **time** require the **dative**.

| vor + Dativ | ago / before | vor zwei Jahren (two years ago) |
| nach + Dativ | after | nach dem Essen (after the meal) |
| in + Dativ | in (future) | in einer Stunde (in an hour) |
| seit + Dativ | since / for | seit einem Jahr (for a year) |
| ab + Dativ | from … on | ab Montag (from Monday on) |

- **Ich lerne seit einem Jahr Deutsch.** — I have been learning German for a year.
- **Ab nächster Woche habe ich Zeit.** — From next week on I have time.

### Special Notes
- *seit* always uses the **present tense** in German even though English uses present perfect: *Ich wohne seit drei Jahren hier* — I have been living here for three years.
- After *vor*, the noun is in the dative — and watch the plural: *vor zwei Jahre**n*** (dative plural needs *-n*).
