## 1. Genitive with Names (-s ending)

### Explanation
In A2, the genitive is introduced only for **proper names**: simply add **-s** (no apostrophe in German!).

### Examples
- **Annas Buch** — Anna's book
- **Lucas Geburtstag** — Luca's birthday
- **Maxʼ Auto** *(when name ends in -s, -ß, -x, -z, just add an apostrophe)*

### Example Sentences
- **Das ist Annas Bruder.** — That is Anna's brother.
- **Lucas Freundin heißt Bea.** — Luca's girlfriend is called Bea.
- **Wo ist Maxʼ Buch?** — Where is Max's book?

### Notes
- For common nouns ("the book of the man"), German uses **von + dative** in everyday speech: *das Buch von dem Mann / vom Mann*. The "real" genitive (*des Mannes*) appears more from B1 onward.

---

## 2. Perfekt — Review and Consolidation

### Recap of the A1 rule
**Auxiliary (*haben*/*sein*) in position 2 + Partizip II at the end.**

### Important Reminders for A2
- Verbs of **movement** or **change of state** → **sein** (gehen, fahren, kommen, fliegen, laufen, fallen, aufwachen, einschlafen, sterben, werden, passieren, bleiben *(exception)*).
- All other verbs (especially those with an accusative object) → **haben**.
- Separable verbs: *ge-* goes between prefix and stem (*aufgestanden*).
- Inseparable prefixes (be-, ge-, er-, ver-, zer-, ent-, emp-, miss-) and *-ieren* verbs → **no *ge-*** (*bezahlt, studiert*).

### Example Sentences
- **Ich habe gestern viel gelernt.** — I learned a lot yesterday.
- **Wir sind ins Kino gegangen.** — We went to the cinema.
- **Sie hat ihre Eltern angerufen.** — She called her parents.
- **Er ist um 7 Uhr aufgestanden.** — He got up at 7.
- **Ich habe die Rechnung schon bezahlt.** — I've already paid the bill.

### Tricky Verbs (memorise)
- *bleiben* → **ist geblieben** (no movement, but takes *sein*).
- *passieren* → **ist passiert**.
- *schwimmen* — both possible: *ist geschwommen* (across a lake) / *hat geschwommen* (as a sport, regional).

---

## 3. Subordinating Conjunction *weil*

### Explanation
*weil* means "because". It is a **subordinating** conjunction — the **conjugated verb moves to the end** of the *weil*-clause.

### Structure
**Main clause + , + weil + subject + … + conjugated verb (end).**

### Example Sentences
- **Ich lerne Deutsch, weil ich in Deutschland arbeiten will.** — I'm learning German because I want to work in Germany.
- **Er geht früh ins Bett, weil er müde ist.** — He goes to bed early because he is tired.
- **Wir bleiben zu Hause, weil es regnet.** — We're staying home because it's raining.
- **Sie kommt nicht, weil sie krank ist.** — She's not coming because she is ill.

### *weil* clause first
If the *weil*-clause comes first, the **main clause begins with the verb** (because the *weil*-clause occupies position 1):
- **Weil es regnet, bleiben wir zu Hause.** — Because it's raining, we're staying home.

### *denn* vs. *weil*
- ***denn*** = coordinating → **no change** in word order.
- ***weil*** = subordinating → **verb to the end**.

Both translate as "because". Same meaning, different grammar.

---

## 4. Subordinating Conjunction *dass*

### Explanation
*dass* = "that" (the conjunction, not the article). It introduces a reported statement and sends the verb to the **end** of the subordinate clause.

### Structure
**Main clause + , + dass + subject + … + conjugated verb (end).**

### Example Sentences
- **Ich glaube, dass du recht hast.** — I think (that) you are right.
- **Sie sagt, dass sie morgen kommt.** — She says (that) she's coming tomorrow.
- **Ich weiß, dass er müde ist.** — I know (that) he is tired.
- **Es ist gut, dass du da bist.** — It's good (that) you are here.
- **Ich hoffe, dass ihr Spaß habt.** — I hope (that) you (all) have fun.

### Notes
- *dass* (conjunction, two s) ≠ *das* (article/pronoun, one s).
- The comma before *dass* is required.

---

## 5. Modalverben im Präteritum

### Explanation
In speaking and writing, **modal verbs are normally used in Präteritum** (simple past), not in Perfekt. The umlaut is **dropped**.

| Pronoun | können → konnte | müssen → musste | wollen → wollte | dürfen → durfte | sollen → sollte | mögen → mochte |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ich | konnte | musste | wollte | durfte | sollte | mochte |
| du | konntest | musstest | wolltest | durftest | solltest | mochtest |
| er/sie/es | konnte | musste | wollte | durfte | sollte | mochte |
| wir | konnten | mussten | wollten | durften | sollten | mochten |
| ihr | konntet | musstet | wolltet | durftet | solltet | mochtet |
| sie/Sie | konnten | mussten | wollten | durften | sollten | mochten |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich konnte gestern nicht kommen.** — I couldn't come yesterday.
- **Wir mussten lange warten.** — We had to wait a long time.
- **Sie wollte Ärztin werden.** — She wanted to become a doctor.
- **Als Kind durfte ich keinen Kaffee trinken.** — As a child I wasn't allowed to drink coffee.
- **Du solltest mehr lernen.** — You should have studied more.
- **Ich mochte Spinat nicht.** — I didn't like spinach.

### Notes
- **No umlaut** in any past form (mü→mu, kö→ko, dü→du, mö→mo).
- *ich* and *er/sie/es* are **identical** (no *-e* and no *-t*).

---

## 6. Possessivartikel im Dativ

### Explanation
In the dative, possessive articles take the same endings as the definite article (*dem, dem, der, den + -n*).

| Gender | Possessive in Dativ |
|---|---|
| Masc. | meine**m** Bruder |
| Neut. | meine**m** Kind |
| Fem. | meine**r** Schwester |
| Plural | meine**n** Eltern (+ -n on noun!) |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich helfe meinem Bruder.** — I help my brother.
- **Sie schenkt ihrer Mutter Blumen.** — She gives her mother flowers.
- **Wir spielen mit unseren Freunden.** — We play with our friends.
- **Er erzählt seinem Sohn eine Geschichte.** — He tells his son a story.
- **Ich danke meinen Eltern.** — I thank my parents.

### Notes
- *euer* still loses its *e* with an ending: *eurem Bruder, eurer Schwester, euren Freunden*.

---

## 7. Adjective Comparison: Komparativ & Superlativ

### Explanation
Regular adjectives form the comparative with **-er** and the superlative with **am … -sten**.

| Adjective | Komparativ | Superlativ |
|---|---|---|
| klein | klein**er** | am klein**sten** |
| schnell | schnell**er** | am schnell**sten** |
| schön | schön**er** | am schön**sten** |
| billig | billig**er** | am billig**sten** |

### Many short adjectives take an **Umlaut**
| Adjective | Komparativ | Superlativ |
|---|---|---|
| alt | **ä**lter | am **ä**ltesten |
| jung | j**ü**nger | am j**ü**ngsten |
| groß | gr**ö**ßer | am gr**ö**ßten *(no -es-)* |
| kalt | k**ä**lter | am k**ä**ltesten |
| warm | w**ä**rmer | am w**ä**rmsten |
| stark | st**ä**rker | am st**ä**rksten |
| lang | l**ä**nger | am l**ä**ngsten |

### Irregular Adjectives
| Positive | Komparativ | Superlativ |
|---|---|---|
| gut | **besser** | am **besten** |
| viel | **mehr** | am **meisten** |
| gern | **lieber** | am **liebsten** |
| hoch | **höher** | am **höchsten** |
| nah | **näher** | am **nächsten** |

### Example Sentences
- **Mein Bruder ist größer als ich.** — My brother is taller than me.
- **Berlin ist größer als Hamburg.** — Berlin is bigger than Hamburg.
- **Anna spricht am besten Deutsch.** — Anna speaks German the best.
- **Ich trinke gern Kaffee, aber lieber Tee.** — I like coffee, but prefer tea.
- **Im Sommer ist es am wärmsten.** — It's warmest in summer.
- **Diese Aufgabe ist am schwersten.** — This task is the hardest.

---

## 8. Comparisons with *als* and *wie*

### Rule
- **als** — used after a **comparative** (= "than"):
  - *Er ist größer **als** ich.* — He is taller than me.
- **(genau)so … wie** — used for **equal** comparisons (= "as … as"):
  - *Sie ist **so** alt **wie** ich.* — She is as old as me.
  - *Er ist **genauso** schnell **wie** du.* — He is just as fast as you.

### Example Sentences
- **Mein Bruder ist älter als ich.** — My brother is older than me.
- **Berlin ist nicht so teuer wie München.** — Berlin is not as expensive as Munich.
- **Mein Hund ist größer als deine Katze.** — My dog is bigger than your cat.
- **Sie spricht genauso gut Deutsch wie ihr Mann.** — She speaks German just as well as her husband.

### Common Mistake
- **Wrong:** *Er ist größer wie ich.* (colloquial / dialect, not standard German)
- **Right:** *Er ist größer **als** ich.*

---

## 9. Subordinating Conjunction *wenn*

### Explanation
*wenn* has **two meanings** in German:
1. **"when / whenever"** — for repeated or general events in the present.
2. **"if"** — for a condition.

It is **subordinating** → verb to the end.

### Example Sentences
- **Wenn ich Zeit habe, lese ich ein Buch.** — When/if I have time, I read a book.
- **Wenn ich müde bin, gehe ich früh ins Bett.** — When I'm tired, I go to bed early.
- **Wenn das Wetter gut ist, machen wir ein Picknick.** — If the weather is nice, we'll have a picnic.
- **Ich freue mich, wenn du kommst.** — I'm happy when/if you come.
- **Wenn ich Urlaub habe, fliege ich nach Indien.** — When I'm on holiday, I fly to India.

### Notes
- For **one single past event** ("when I was a child"), use ***als*** — see §25.
- *wenn* in present/future = "when (repeated)" or "if".

---

## 10. Reflexive Verbs (Reflexivverben)

### Explanation
A reflexive verb describes an action the subject does **to itself**. You always need a **reflexive pronoun** that matches the subject.

### Reflexive Pronouns

| Subject | Akk. reflexive | Dat. reflexive |
|---|---|---|
| ich | mich | mir |
| du | dich | dir |
| er/sie/es | **sich** | **sich** |
| wir | uns | uns |
| ihr | euch | euch |
| sie/Sie | **sich** | **sich** |

### Common Reflexive Verbs
- **sich freuen (über/auf)** — to be happy (about/looking forward to)
- **sich interessieren (für)** — to be interested in
- **sich treffen** — to meet (each other)
- **sich anmelden (für)** — to register for
- **sich entschuldigen (bei … für …)** — to apologize

- **Bitte beeile dich!** — Hurry up!

### Dative reflexive (when there's also an Akk. object)
- **Ich wasche mir die Hände.** — I wash my hands. *(my hands = akk. → I (reflexive) = dat.)*
- **Ich kann mir das nicht vorstellen.** — I can't imagine that.

---

## 11. Adjective Endings after the Definite Article

### Explanation
When an adjective stands **directly before a noun** (attributive use), it takes an ending. The endings depend on what article (if any) precedes it and on the case/gender of the noun.

### After **der/das/die** (definite article) → "weak endings"

| | Masc. | Neut. | Fem. | Plural |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Nom.** | der nett**e** Mann | das nett**e** Kind | die nett**e** Frau | die nett**en** Leute |
| **Akk.** | den nett**en** Mann | das nett**e** Kind | die nett**e** Frau | die nett**en** Leute |
| **Dat.** | dem nett**en** Mann | dem nett**en** Kind | der nett**en** Frau | den nett**en** Leuten |

### Memory Hook
After the definite article, almost everything is **-en**. Only the **5 nominative + 2 accusative** "easy slots" (masc. nom., neut. nom./akk., fem. nom./akk.) get **-e**.

### Example Sentences
- **Der neue Mantel ist schön.** — The new coat is nice.
- **Ich nehme den blauen Pullover.** — I'll take the blue pullover.
- **Das kleine Kind weint.** — The little child is crying.
- **Mit der roten Tasche siehst du toll aus.** — You look great with the red bag.
- **Die alten Häuser sind aus Holz.** — The old houses are made of wood.

---

## 12. Preposition *ohne* + Accusative / *mit* + Dative (Contrast)

### Recap
- **ohne** = without — always **Akkusativ**.
- **mit** = with — always **Dativ**.

### Example Sentences
- **Ich trinke Kaffee ohne Zucker.** — I drink coffee without sugar.
- **Ohne meinen Pass kann ich nicht reisen.** — Without my passport I can't travel.
- **Ich fahre mit dem Bus.** — I'm going by bus.
- **Sie kommt mit ihrer Freundin.** — She's coming with her (female) friend.

---

## 13. Konjunktiv II: *könnte* (Polite Requests)

### Explanation
*könnte* (subjunctive of *können*) makes a request **softer / more polite**.

| Pronoun | könnte |
|---|---|
| ich | könnte |
| du | könntest |
| er/sie/es | könnte |
| wir | könnten |
| ihr | könntet |
| sie/Sie | könnten |

### Example Sentences
- **Könnten Sie mir bitte helfen?** — Could you please help me? (formal)
- **Könntest du das Fenster aufmachen?** — Could you open the window?
- **Ich könnte später kommen.** — I could come later.
- **Wir könnten zusammen essen.** — We could eat together.

### Notes
- Compare: ***Kannst du …?*** (can / direct) vs. ***Könntest du …?*** (could / polite).

---

## 14. Adjective Endings after the Indefinite Article

### Explanation
After **ein/eine/kein/mein/dein/…** the adjective has to "carry" the gender info (because *ein* doesn't show it on its own). The endings are slightly stronger.

| | Masc. | Neut. | Fem. | Plural (no *ein*, with *kein/mein*) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| **Nom.** | ein nett**er** Mann | ein nett**es** Kind | eine nett**e** Frau | keine nett**en** Leute |
| **Akk.** | einen nett**en** Mann | ein nett**es** Kind | eine nett**e** Frau | keine nett**en** Leute |
| **Dat.** | einem nett**en** Mann | einem nett**en** Kind | einer nett**en** Frau | keinen nett**en** Leuten |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich habe einen neuen Job.** — I have a new job.
- **Das ist ein interessantes Buch.** — That's an interesting book.
- **Sie hat eine schöne Wohnung.** — She has a nice flat.
- **Mit einem guten Freund macht alles Spaß.** — With a good friend everything is fun.
- **Ich brauche keine neuen Schuhe.** — I don't need any new shoes.

### Tip
After *ein-*: masculine takes **-er**, neuter **-es**, feminine **-e**. Everywhere else (akk. masc., all dative, all plural with *kein-/possessive*) → **-en**.

---

## 15. The Verb *werden*

### Explanation
*werden* means **"to become"** and is irregular.

| Pronoun | werden |
|---|---|
| ich | werde |
| du | wirst |
| er/sie/es | wird |
| wir | werden |
| ihr | werdet |
| sie/Sie | werden |

### Past
- Präteritum: *ich wurde*
- Perfekt: *ich bin geworden*

### Example Sentences
- **Sie will Ärztin werden.** — She wants to become a doctor.
- **Im Winter wird es früh dunkel.** — In winter it gets dark early.
- **Mein Sohn wird heute 10 Jahre alt.** — My son is turning 10 today.
- **Wir werden bald Urlaub machen.** — We'll be going on holiday soon. *(future use — B1)*

---

## 16. Indirect Questions: W-Fragen and *ob*

### Explanation
Indirect questions are subordinate clauses, so the verb goes to the **end**.

- **W-question** → use the W-word as conjunction.
- **Yes/no question** → use **ob** (= "if/whether").

### Structure
**Main clause + , + W-word / ob + subject + … + verb (end).**

### Example Sentences
- **Direct:** *Wo wohnst du?* → **Indirect:** *Ich weiß nicht, wo du wohnst.* — I don't know where you live.
- **Direct:** *Wann beginnt der Film?* → *Kannst du mir sagen, wann der Film beginnt?* — Can you tell me when the film starts?
- **Direct:** *Kommst du?* → *Ich frage mich, ob du kommst.* — I wonder if you're coming.
- **Direct:** *Hat er Zeit?* → *Weißt du, ob er Zeit hat?* — Do you know if he has time?

### Notes
- *ob* is **only** used for yes/no questions, never for "if" in a conditional sense (that's *wenn*).

---

## 17. Local Prepositions — Review and Extension

### Recap and Extension

| Question | Prep. | Case | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| wohin? | **in, auf, an, zu, nach** | Akk. (with in/auf/an) / Dat. (with zu, nach) | Ich gehe ins Kino. Ich fahre zur Schule. Wir fahren nach Berlin. |
| wo? | **in, auf, an, bei** | Dat. | Ich bin im Kino. Das Buch liegt auf dem Tisch. |
| woher? | **aus, von** | Dat. | Ich komme aus Indien. Das ist von meinem Freund. |

### Special rules: cities, countries
- **nach** + cities, most countries (no article): *Ich fahre nach Berlin / nach Deutschland.*
- **in** + countries **with article**: *Ich fahre in die Schweiz / in die Türkei / in die USA.*
- **zu** + people / specific places: *Ich gehe zum Arzt / zu meiner Mutter.*

### Example Sentences
- **Ich gehe in die Stadt.** *(wohin?, Akk.)*
- **Ich bin in der Stadt.** *(wo?, Dativ)*
- **Wir fahren nach München.** *(no article)*
- **Wir fahren in die Schweiz.** *(article)*
- **Ich gehe zum Bahnhof.** *(zu + dem → zum)*

---

## 18. Konjunktiv II: *sollte* (Advice)

### Explanation
*sollte* gives **advice** or **recommendations** — softer than *müssen*.

| Pronoun | sollte |
|---|---|
| ich | sollte |
| du | solltest |
| er/sie/es | sollte |
| wir | sollten |
| ihr | solltet |
| sie/Sie | sollten |

### Example Sentences
- **Du solltest mehr schlafen.** — You should sleep more.
- **Sie sollte zum Arzt gehen.** — She should go to the doctor.
- **Wir sollten pünktlich sein.** — We should be on time.
- **Ihr solltet mehr Gemüse essen.** — You (all) should eat more vegetables.
- **Was sollte ich tun?** — What should I do?

### Notes
- *sollte* = advice (subjunctive). *sollen* = obligation from someone else / what someone is supposed to do.

---

## 19. Interrogative Article: *Was für ein(e)?*

### Explanation
*Was für ein(e) …?* = "What kind of …?" — asks about the type. The endings on *ein-* follow normal article rules for the case the noun is in.

### Example Sentences
- **Was für ein Auto hast du?** — What kind of car do you have? *(nom., neut.)*
- **Was für einen Beruf hat sie?** — What kind of job does she have? *(akk., masc.)*
- **Was für eine Wohnung suchst du?** — What kind of flat are you looking for? *(akk., fem.)*
- **Mit was für einem Mann ist sie verheiratet?** — What kind of man is she married to? *(dat., masc.)*
- **Was für Bücher liest du gern?** — What kind of books do you like reading? *(plural — no article)*

### Notes
- Plural: **Was für Bücher** (no article, *ein* has no plural).
- *Welcher/welche/welches* (= which one — see A1 §33) is **different**: *welch-* picks a specific one out of a set.

---

## 20. Conjunctions: *deshalb* (Therefore) & *trotzdem* (Nevertheless)

### Explanation
These two are **adverbs / connectors**, not subordinating conjunctions. They sit in **position 1** of the second clause, which means the **verb comes right after** in position 2 (inversion).

### Structure
**Main clause + . + deshalb / trotzdem + verb + subject + …**

### Example Sentences
- **Ich habe Hunger. Deshalb mache ich ein Sandwich.** — I'm hungry. So I'm making a sandwich.
- **Es regnet. Trotzdem gehe ich spazieren.** — It's raining. Nevertheless I'm going for a walk.
- **Er ist krank, deshalb bleibt er zu Hause.** — He's ill, therefore he's staying home.
- **Sie ist müde, trotzdem arbeitet sie weiter.** — She's tired, nevertheless she keeps working.

### *deshalb* vs. *weil*
- *deshalb* introduces the **consequence** ("therefore"). *Es regnet. **Deshalb** bleibe ich zu Hause.*
- *weil* introduces the **reason** ("because"). *Ich bleibe zu Hause, **weil** es regnet.*

### *trotzdem* vs. *aber*
- Both express contrast. *trotzdem* is stronger ("nevertheless").

---

## 21. Verbs with Dative AND Accusative

### Explanation
Some verbs need **both** an indirect (dative, the receiver) and a direct (accusative, the thing) object:
**geben, schenken, schicken, schreiben, bringen, zeigen, kaufen, erklären, empfehlen, leihen, erzählen, kochen**.

### Pattern
**Subject + verb + Dativ (receiver) + Akkusativ (thing).**

### Example Sentences
- **Ich gebe meinem Bruder ein Buch.** — I give my brother a book.
- **Sie schickt ihrer Freundin eine Postkarte.** — She sends her friend a postcard.
- **Der Lehrer erklärt den Schülern die Grammatik.** — The teacher explains the grammar to the students.
- **Ich kaufe meiner Mutter Blumen.** — I'm buying my mother flowers.
- **Kannst du mir den Stift leihen?** — Can you lend me the pen?
- **Er empfiehlt mir ein gutes Restaurant.** — He recommends a good restaurant to me.

---

## 22. Object Word Order (Dat–Akk Rules)

### The Three Rules
When a sentence has **two objects**, the order depends on whether they are nouns or pronouns:

| Combination | Order | Example |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Two **nouns** | **Dat. before Akk.** | Ich gebe **meinem Bruder** **das Buch**. |
| 2. Two **pronouns** | **Akk. before Dat.** | Ich gebe **es** **ihm**. |
| 3. One **noun**, one **pronoun** | **Pronoun first** (no matter the case) | Ich gebe **es meinem Bruder**. / Ich gebe **ihm das Buch**. |

### Example Sentences
- **Ich kaufe meiner Mutter einen Schal.** *(Dat. noun + Akk. noun)*
- **Ich kaufe ihn ihr.** *(Akk. pronoun + Dat. pronoun — pronoun-pronoun: Akk. first)*
- **Ich kaufe ihn meiner Mutter.** *(pronoun first, then noun)*
- **Ich kaufe ihr einen Schal.** *(pronoun first, then noun)*

| auf + das = **aufs** *(informal)* | |

---

## 24. Position vs. Direction Verbs (*stehen/stellen, liegen/legen* …)

### Explanation
A set of paired verbs distinguishes **where something is** (Dat.) from **where it is moved to** (Akk.). The "position" verbs are intransitive; the "direction" verbs are transitive (need an Akk. object).

| Position (wo? → Dat.) | Direction (wohin? → Akk.) | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| **stehen** *(stand, stood, stood)* | **stellen** *(stell, stellte, gestellt)* | be standing / put upright |

## 28. W-Fragen with Prepositions (Pronominal Adverbs)

### Explanation
When asking about a **thing** in a verb + preposition combination, German combines **wo(r)-** + preposition. For **people**, use the preposition + W-form (*auf wen?*, *mit wem?*).

| Thing | Person |
|---|---|
| **wofür**? (for what?) | **für wen**? |
| **worauf**? (on what / for what?) | **auf wen**? |
| **wovon**? (of/from what?) | **von wem**? |
| **wovor**? (of what?) | **vor wem**? |
| **worüber**? (about what?) | **über wen**? |
| **woran**? (on/at what?) | **an wen**? |
| **womit**? (with what?) | **mit wem**? |

### Answers — *dafür, darauf, davon …*
| Thing | Person |
|---|---|
| **dafür** (for it) | **für ihn / sie** |
| **darauf** (on it) | **auf ihn / sie** |
| **davon** (of it) | **von ihm / ihr** |
| **damit** (with it) | **mit ihm / ihr** |
| **darüber** (about it) | **über ihn / sie** |
| **daran** (on/at it) | **an ihn / sie** |

### Rule
- Preposition starts with vowel → **wor- / dar-**: *worauf, woran, worüber* / *darauf, daran, darüber*.
- Preposition starts with consonant → **wo- / da-**: *wofür, womit* / *dafür, damit*.

### Example Sentences
- **Worauf wartest du?** — What are you waiting for? — **Auf den Bus, darauf warte ich.** — I'm waiting for the bus.
